MAIDS Double Degree Programme (DDP) (Course Code: 3791)

in Cooperation with Sophia University, Japan

Application for this track opens from February to April every year.

This course runs in a trimester basis, and is designed for students to graduate within two year. Students will be spending a total of one year at Chulalongkorn University, and one year at Sophia University, Japan.

Applicants under Double Degree Track are considered as special application, which selects eligible applicants through profile qualification and interview.
By applying through this channel, applicant may not be able to apply to some scholarships provided by the graduate school. Please check with the graduate school for more detail.

Foreign students: ASEAN/NON-ASEAN Scholarship, MGAP

Qualification for MAIDS DDP Track

  1. Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with GPAX of 3.30 or higher

  2. Applicants should also have working or volunteer experiences in the field of International Development.

  3. Minimum English language requirements for non-native English speaking applicants:

    • TOEFL IBT 95 (no sub-score less than 22)

    • IELTS 7.0 (no sub-score less than 6.5)

    • No English test score exemption

  4. Other particular qualifications as announced by the Graduate School in each academic year, or approved by the MAIDS Programme Comittee.

  5. At least one academic recommendation letter

Required documents
After completed the application process on the Graduate School’s website, applicant must save the completed application in pdf format, and submit the following documents to application.maids@gmail.com, with an email titled “Application 2022 – Your Lastname (MAIDS DDP Track)

  1. Completed application from the Graduate School’s Website
    (Save in pdf format, name the file “ApplicationForm-YourLastname”)

  2. A copy of valid passport with your signature
    (Save in pdf format, name the file “Passport-YourLastname”)

  3. Academic documents: A copy of your degree, transcript, and English test report (if not exempted)
    (Sort to order, combined together in a single file. Save in pdf format, name the file “AcademicDocuments-YourLastname”)

  4. Passport photo
    (Save in .jpg or pdf format, name the file “Photo-YourLastname”)

  5. Statement of Purpose (not exceeding 1,000 words)

    (Save in pdf format, name the file “SOP-YourLastname”)

  6. Completed scholarship application (if any)

    (Save in pdf format, name the file “Scholarship-YourLastname”)

  7. An application fee payment slip of THB 800 (See payment method for more details)

    Apart from documents in the list above, 2 Recommendation Letters (at least 1 from academic staff) is also required to submit separately by the recommender to application.maids@gmail.com with email title: Recommendation – the Applicant’s Lastname”

Course Structure

This course runs in a trimester basis, and is designed for students to graduate within two year. Students will be spending a total of one year at Chulalongkorn University, and one year at Sophia University, Japan.

The available programme at Sophia University are MA in Global Studies, MA in Japanese Studies, and MA in International Business and Developmental Studies. Details of the Programme can be found here.

Accepted MA DDP students have to process their application to Sophia University after they’re accepted by MAIDS Programme.

Students who aim to graduate within two years should follow the following structure:

Trimester 1 Study at Chulalongkorn University
Student must register and study in 2 compulsory courses and 3 elective courses.

- 2440604 Research Methods in Development Studies
and choose 3 elective courses.
DOMESTIC FIELD TRIP** may be held in this trimester.
In total, students should have 5 courses registered in the first trimester.

Trimester 2 Study at Chulalongkorn University
*Student must register and study in 2 compulsory courses and 1 elective course.
Student can choose to enroll in Development Practicum at your preferred development-related organization (with the approval of the faculty professor) instead of elective course.
*Student must register a thesis course for their proposal exam in this trimester.

- 2440811 Thesis (3 credits)
and choose either one elective course or Development Practicum course.
INTERNATIONAL FIELD TRIP** may be held in this trimester.
In total, students should have 4 courses registered in the second trimester.

Trimester 3 - 5 Study at Sophia University
Students will be studying in Sophia according to Sophia’s curriculum. Students will be co-supervised with the professors from Sophia.

The available programme at Sophia University are MA in Global Studies, MA in Japanese Studies, and MA in International Business and Developmental Studies. Details of the Programme can be found here.


Trimester 6 Study at Chulalongkorn University
Student must register a thesis course for their thesis exam in this trimester.
- 2440811 Thesis (9 credits)
In total, students should have 1 course registered in the sixth trimester.

EXTENSION PAST TRIMESTER 6
Students who cannot finish within the sixth trimester can extend their period of thesis writing on a trimester basis, by registering 0 credits for the Thesis course and paid fees according to Chulalongkorn University’s Regulations.

**The program will held either one domestic field trip, one international field trip, or both domestic and international field trips for each of the academic year. The trip will be held by taking into consideration, the safety and of the students and staffs, and suitability of surrounding events. Shall any force majeure event occur, the program may suspend, postpone, or cancel the obligation of hosting the field trip.

If student graduated within 2 years (6 trimesters), the total cost for the program will be as follows:
Thai students: THB 357,800
International students: THB 722,000
